Week in review

The Week In Review is a snapshot and “one stop shop” of articles we’ve written during the week and other content we’ve found interesting and come across on the internet. The topics will vary but generally should have some linkage and relevance to what we discuss. Perspective and knowledge can provide some wonderful insights and inspiration. Hope you enjoy the spin!

Wednesday: Make Jet Lag a Myth

Stuff we found interesting on the web:

  1. REITS can be an important aspect of your portfolio. The downside is depending on where they are allocated (tax advantaged vs non-tax advantaged accounts) they can have major tax implications because they are mandated to return 90% of the taxable income to shareholders in the form of dividends. For those retiring early this perspective is they are the ultimate investment tool. They also feel it is time to abandon the 4% rule (not sure I agree). Apparently there is another source that supports it. So is 5% the new number?
  2. Since we are talking alternative investments and real estate in particular I found this pretty insightful. Perhaps you aren’t familiar with the differences between second homes and investment properties and how it relates to the tax code. Some careful thought should be put into it!
  3. Mrs. Spender was never very fond of eggs growing up because they were forced upon her. Now she seems to have overcome the mental hurdles and we eat them quite often (the little guy is a huge fan) so for the egg lovers out there learn the truth about eggs.
  4. We are still learning how to use our DSLR to its capabilities and for those in a similar boat this cheat sheet should be helpful. Once we knew our little guy was going to be arriving we felt it was a great investment to document the memories. We only kick ourselves we didn’t purchase it four or five months sooner than we did to take advantage of our trip to South Africa and our safari 🙁

September is winding down and fall is definitely upon us. Mr. Saver has a work trip to Washington D.C. next week and he’s definitely looking forward to the fall colors and leaves. Our little guy is definitely taking to football or “feefall” as he calls it. October and the baseball playoffs are around the corner, you can almost smell it in the air! Can you tell we are a sports family? The added bonus is the farmers markets are going to kick back into gear here soon which is always a nice Saturday morning distraction. Stay safe everyone and thanks for reading!
