Two years ago, the end of 2021 headed into 2022, we had just experienced two of the hardest years of our lives. Navigating the nonstop ups and downs of pandemic life. We took guidelines seriously and sheltered for quite some time, deciding to pull our child out of preschool, both parents working from home together with a child. Many of you know the drill, each family had their own unique experience and set of circumstances. Looking back, I can reflect and be thankful for a lot of things that came out of that very scary time.  One specifically, is the challenge Mr. Saver and I took to think differently. Of course that can mean so many things, so here are some of the questions we asked ourselves when we were thinking differently:

  • Does our child have to go to a traditional school and follow a traditional school year?
  • Is he really getting the most out of the education he’s receiving?
  • Is our life helping or hurting him by staying in our comfort bubble?
  • Does our retire early goal of 45 years old make sense?
  • Our son is attending a bilingual school, how can we reinforce what he’s learning?
  • What would we do after we hit that number of 45? Our child would only be in 5th grade.
  • Our child is young, at this time he was approaching 5, are we making the most of these years?
  • Are we making the most of our time NOW versus waiting?
  • We really like our community and life, where would be go?

Slowly but surely these questions caused the ‘Pivot Plan’ to develop. What could we do and how could we pivot from the original goal to make the most of our life NOW. Keep in mind, this was V1 of the Pivot Plan as it has evolved over the past two years to where it is today (more on that in a future post). Teaser: we’re putting it into place Summer 2024.

Pivot Plan V1

Here was v1: both Mr.Saver and myself would quit our corporate and well-paying jobs, pull our son out of school and travel for one-year, all together! We would home school our child, we would stay in one-location for at least 30-days and we would start at one-point and end at another. This was the plan for a while, some of the highlights included:

  • Charting a google map of our path. We would start in Buenos Aires, Argentina and end in Oaxaca, Mexico.
  • Destination research, options for 30-day AirBnBs. Focusing on the philosophy of geographic arbitrage locations.
  • Tapping into the Worldschooling communities for our son.
  • Transportation logistics.
  • A budget and saving plan.
  • Health insurance research.
  • Timing: when should we do this? Our son’s second, third or fourth grade year.

It was starting to come together…….then things changed!  Have you or your families gone through similar through processes coming out of the pandemic?

Mrs. Spender!
